Barnegat Light, NJ (Part Two)

The lighthouse at Barnegat Light was completed in 1859.

George Gordon Meade was the engineer who designed it, along with several other lighthouses on the east coast.

Meade commanded the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War and distinguished himself by winning several battles, including the Battle of Gettysburg. (Portrait by Matthew Brady)

His horse, named Old Baldy, was wounded several times in the war but outlived General Meade by ten years. (Photo from the Library of Congress)
