Vampire Music

I had a dream about Vampires last night. Part of the dream involved deciphering the secret Vampiric message in the Nirvana song "Dive". When I woke up I thought it was funny, but now I've decided that I was right. I tried to think of some more Vampire songs and I came up with a few good ones. One in particular is a song called "The Age of Backwards" by The Spells. They only put out one record and they were a side project of Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney and Mary Timony from Helium.

Did you observe St. Lucy's Day?
My parents used to belong to a church with a penchant for Scandinavian culture, and December 13th is the only saints day they recognized. I used to love the white robes and candle-wreath, but it was a girls-only affair so I never got to wear a pointy wizard hat. These days I'm more interested in the pre-christian origins of the celebration.

Women's International Terrorist Conspiracy from Hell

Miranda mentioned this group a few weeks ago and I just realized that I had these photos.
They were taken by Lee Balterman for LIFE magazine at a protest in support of the Chicago Eight.
Photos of a different W.I.T.C.H. protest (they called them hexes) are available at Jo Freeman's site, a really great resource for first-hand information about social movements of the sixties and seventies.

Freeman says:

The following Halloween (1969) the target was the trial of New Left leaders, arrested for conspiracy after protests disrupted the 1968 Democratic Convention.
Slowly, solemnly, the Witches filed around the Federal Building in Chicago's Loop, faces painted white, staring straight ahead, flowing black capes swirling around them. "Our sister justice lies chained and tied," they chanted. "We curse the ground on which she died."

On a more personal and non-fiction note, Poor Valley is about thirty miles from where my mom grew up.
What's your favorite Carter Family song?
I'm going with "I'm Thinking Tonight of My Blue Eyes". Unless it's "Hello Stranger" or "Wildwood Flower". "No Depression in Heaven" is really good too. Of course, if you like church songs there's always "Can the Circle Be Unbroken" and "Anchored in Love".
