Australian Life Savers

Not too much info about these.
The top one is by John Dominis, 1958.

Hello - yesterday I went to Bryant Park to see Dennis Cooper interviewed by Tony O'Neill.
It was great.
I did some other stuff after that, but nothing too exciting.

Jennette: Give running a chance, it's fun if you go in the morning. I see people running after work and it always gives me a weird feeling. I think they are living the day backwards or something.

The International Times

Archive of the International Times

via: Boredom is Always Counter-Revolutionary
Hey - long weekend. Went for a bike ride with Jeff and Kelly on Friday.
Rode up to the Little Red Lighthouse under the George Washington Bridge.
Saturday we went to Kristen and Yoni's wedding in Rhode Island.
Sunday and Monday we relaxed with friends in the quiet New Jersey suburbs.
Yesterday was back to normal, then a dinner party in the evening.
Today I went for a run, but it was raining so I just went over the bridge and back.
Not much else to report...watched a couple of Buster Keaton movies recently.
"One Week", a silent short, and "Film" which is from a Samuel Beckett screenplay.
As you can probably imagine, the first one was way more enjoyable.

It's A Happening

Going to a wedding tomorrow.
I assume it will look like the pictures above.

These are labeled "Modern Living Happening Thomas Moving".

Hey - not much going on here.
Went to Trophy bar last night for the first time.
Had after "work" drinks with Matt and Kelly.
There's a nice backyard and they had the grill going.
Went home and tried to make okonomiyaki.
Sometimes the first attempt doesn't go that well.
Burned the first one, second one was...pretty good.
It was a learning experience.
Today we're gonna ride some bikes and see some art.

Matt: the "Cans Film Festival" is probably in LA not France.

Creepy gazes from the archive.

Hey. I was reading about the new Lars von Trier movie...yikes!
Trip to the unemployment office was strange but fine.
Dinner at Molly and David's, insanely good salad.
Kelly, Jeff and I went to Union Pool.
Talked and sang with Matt and Jen.
That's about it.

Jennette: I'll report back about the place on Grand, and any others I come across.

circle & square: I got a ton of responses to my business card question on Facebook. Researching my options. Now if Facebook people could just find me a job...

Unemployment Office

I have to go to the unemployment office this afternoon.
Probably will be slightly more crowded than the pics above.
Also, I'm looking for a place to get business cards printed.
If you know of any good places (or jobs) let me know.

Sour Milk: Sorry for the confusion.
Jennette: Thanks! I will take a stroll over there and see if they'll sell me some.

Hey. Not much to report. Last night was Taco Nite at HQBK. Beans with onion and jalapeno, then a zucchini and yam filling, topped with cheese and an avocado salsa cruda thing. Does anyone know where to get fresh tortillas? There's that place in Bushwick right? Can I get an address?
This morning I went out for a six mile run. Considering how long it took, I guess it was really more of a jog.

Mount St. Helens - 1980

photos from here
Hey. Big weekend started Thursday. Went to a gallery opening with Beth, then got some great food. Friday went to Cold Spring with Juliet and Carl. Breakneck Ridge, ruins, frog pond madness. Will post photos soon. Sarah's birthday on Saturday. Fun times, dancing...etc etc. How was your weekend?

Thursday, May 14, 2009

Oh yeah...I got distracted and forgot a couple of things.
First, you should know that there are no Madonna songs on the mix below.
Don't be disappointed, the Madonna post just happened to fall on the same day.

David Michael: I'll try to be a better slacker...I'm working on it.
Sour Milk: Yeah, what does "rustic" mean? That's just what it said on the recipe. Maybe you're supposed to make it with an axe when you're camping?

Early Madonna

Hey. Do you like music? Me too. I've been trying to make a little mix of fun stuff every month. Here's March. There's a pdf in there with the titles etc. I'll put up the others in a little while. There's no theme really, just stuff that I like at the time. Enough to fit on a CD if you're so inclined. March happens to be a little heavy on Source Family bands, and I got a little ska-happy in April. Anyway, let me know what you think.
Not much going on around here. Dealing with ants in the kitchen. Talked to my mom about genealogy research this morning. Going to see some art tonight.

More Calder here and here.
Hey. Not much to report over the last couple of days. Been cooking a lot. Made a "rustic" red cabbage soup last night. Monday night was linguine with mushroom/herb/tomato sauce. Vegetable couscous for lunch. Kelly made blueberry muffins the other day. Other than that, been working on some projects. Saw the new Jessica Stockholder installation at Madison Square Park. Not terribly impressed. Oh, and running...5 miles Monday and 5.5 today.

Portraits

I've been thinking a lot about portraits lately.
Anybody out there feel like modeling?
Nothing too formal...well, actually formal might be kind of fun.

1. Charles Dickens (chillin') n.d.
2. "The hand of artist Georgia O'Keeffe holding one of her favorite stones in her palm." John Loengard - Albiquiu, NM - 1968
3. "Singer Barbra Streisand and others, Marlene Dietrich, Elsa Martinelli, wearing Chanel suits at Chanel fashion show." Bill Eppridge - Paris - 1966
4. "Film director Francois Truffaut (L) with actress Julie Christie (R) during filming of 'Fahrenheit 451.'" - Paul Schutzer - London - 1966
5. "Poet-Doctor William Carlos Williams sitting in his house." Lisa Larsen - US - 1954
6. "Glamorous full-length portrait of movie actress Hedy Lamarr wearing long gown superimposed (probably unintentionally) over portrait of her." Alfred Eisenstaedt - US - 1938
7. "Bebob king, Dizzy Gillespie, a Mohammedan, is bowing to Mecca from his Hollywood apartment." Allan Grant - Hollywood - 1948 (I think they meant "bebop" not "bebob")
8. "General Norstad'S Color Portrait" Howard Sochurek - n.d.
9. "Actress Sophia Loren sitting affectionately with sons Carlo & Edorardo Ponti." Alfred Eisenstaedt - Paris - 1976

Hey. We were pretty beat from FEAST yesterday so we took it easy. Rode our bikes in a leisurely manner and made the rounds to McGolrick Park, East River State Park, and McCarren Park. Met up with August, Willow and Jeff at the last stop. Went home and made quiche. Kelly made cake. That's about it. How was your weekend?

FEAST #3

FEAST just keeps getting better. Here's a couple photos.

Joey Zvejnieks, one of the grantees from last time, talks about his project Hot Dog Hot Dog.

Counting the votes.

Jeff with the big bag of money.

Sierra Pettengill and Benjamin Cohen went home with the big grant. Their project is The Great Trans-Gowanus Cable.

Also, I just did a search for FEAST and found these photos here.

This band was good and did a Joy Division cover.

Trinie Dalton reads her story "Frog Hole '08".
Hey. Tired from FEAST yesterday. Photos above, more later.

Matt: I'm going to go back to see the Oldenberg soon. And the Sadie Benning video...Jeff said it was the best thing there. That's weird about the gallery size, I guess it did seem smaller.

Hey. Today is FEAST. Are you as excited as I am? I'll let you know how it goes.
Yesterday I didn't do too much except make a couple drawings. Then I met up with KellyR at Central Park and we took one of those rowboats for a spin. Went to the Whitney at 6 for "pay what you wish" night. I wish to pay one dollar for two tickets, please. Saw the big Jenny Holzer and it's a real mind melter. Pretty intense with the epilepsy lights and the pile of human bones. Love those redacted paintings, or at least the idea of them. Walked around upstairs there and saw a few paintings and photos, then saw Matt C on the way out.

Sour Milk: Yes, I meant "Souseton". Re: inversion goggles, I'll see if Kelly is up for Painting Party Part 2.

SoHo 1970

#1: "A congested street in Soho where more than a thousand artists live and work in huge lofts."
#2: "Sculptor Duane Hanson (rear blond male) standing w. life-size fiberglass models of winos, cops, soldiers and demonstrators in front of SoHo art gallery."

#1: "Linda and Tom Blackwell sitting on sofa in their live-in loft in SoHo."
#2: "Painter Nobu Fukui playing ping pong during party in his live-in work loft in SoHo."
#3: No caption.
#4: "Sculptor Bill Tarr and wife Yvonne sitting on platform in his Soho studio (that they will convert into a live-in loft) w. his welded steel and bronze sculptures on floor below."
#5: "Painter Jack Beal and his wife, sculptor Sondra, sitting at table in their Soho loft w. his artwork hanging on walls."
#6: "Multimedia artist Bob Wiegand exercising on trapeze in his loft w. his artwork in the background." (photo is upside down.)

All photos by John Dominis.

Hey. Went to Soho yesterday to see some art, then made some harissa spaghetti with kale for dinner. Art was good, dinner was great.

Unica Zurn at Drawing Center - pretty, spooky automatic drawings from Hans Bellmer's partner. Do I even have to tell you that there are bondage photos? Of course there are. Anybody have a copy of Dark Spring I can borrow?
Ruben Ochoa at Peter Blum - Never heard of this guy but it was great. As I was looking at it I was thinking about Los Angeles. Turns out he's from there.
Walter De Maria Earth Room - After all that dirt I figured I should pay this a visit. The best part is the way it smells when you're walking up the steps.
David Shaw at Feature - great! Should I be ashamed to admit that I went because of a Facebook post from Jesse B?

Matt: I am on a bulk foods hunt for sure. Went to some Indian place in midtown the other day but it wasn't that great.
Carl: There is definitely a cheap food gross-out factor that I am trying to avoid. I don't think Kelly would eat anything scooped out of a 5 gallon bucket.
Sour Milk: Inversion glasses kit available here. Not as cool as the old ones of course. I'll check ebay.

When In Doubt...

From Wikipedia:
"Oblique Strategies (subtitled 'over one hundred worthwhile dilemmas') is a set of published cards created by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt first published in 1975, and now in its fifth edition. Each card contains a phrase or cryptic remark which can be used to break a deadlock or dilemma situation."

"All five editions are now available in Apple's iTunes Appstore, for the iPhone and iPod Touch."

Order the latest deck here.

Online versions here, here, and here.

Hey. I've been thinking about doing a sort of daily postscript like Dennis Cooper does on his blog. Now that I have time I'm going to try it out. Don't worry, I'll keep it short. Speaking of having time, I got my first unemployment payment. Holy shit! Post your beans and rice recipes in the comments please. Or just send some job listings my way. Yikes! Anyway, I'm on house husband duty so last night I cooked up some quinoa with grilled zucchini from 101 Cookbooks. Pretty good, if I do say so myself, and cheap. In other news, I went running this morning and I think I found a stretch to take care of my sore ankle/calf. That's all for now...

Sour Milk: I didn't even think of trying to track down those inversion goggles. I will get on it and report back.

Science

Photos by Alfred Eisenstaedt of a 1950 vision experiment.

Caption #3: "Graduate student Fred Snyder falling down after removing special eyeglasses that reverse and invert everything he sees. Immediately before removing glasses he rode a bicycle with perfect control along sidewlk in Central Park at end of 30 day experiment to learn whether vision is a natural function or a process that must be learned."

Museum Trip

Went to MoMA today with Kelly R. (thanks August!)
Saw the big Martin Kippenberger show and the Tehching Hsieh stuff.
Buzzed through "Tangled Alphabets" and "Compass in Hand".
There's always too much stuff and I can only take so much.

Tried to recreate a Sigmar Polke drawing when we got home.

Later, I was searching the Life Magazine archive for interesting photos.
Found a bunch from April of 1958 that were all related to a fire. (mentioned here)
A couple of them had the caption "Employees moving paintings during the fire."
I thought to myself, "I wonder if Frank O'Hara is in any of these. That would be weird."

Behold!

Detail:

Am I right or am I right?
(Kelly's not convinced.)
