One More Gjon Mili

This one didn't upload the other day, it's from "Hunter Weider Spring Fall".

Life Through The Sixtees - Slides

source:life

I've got to stop cruising the Life Magazine Archive.
It's becoming a real addiction.
These are from a group of photos labeled "Life Through The Sixtees - Slides", and yes I know it's spelled wrong.
There were no captions, dates, photographer credits, or anything else but I think they are from a book that came out in the 80s.
I only picked hippie-related pictures, but there's lots of other great stuff too.

Gjon Mili?

"Hunter Weider Spring Fall"

"Hunter Choice Spring Fall"

source:life

I found these when I was searching for photos of Spring.
They're from the Life magazine archive and I think they are student work from the early 1970s.
They are credited to Gjon Mili who worked at Life for many years, but there is not much more information to go on.
Mili taught at my alma mater, Hunter College, and it looks like these photos were made for a class, or maybe two separate classes.
I picked a few that seem less college student-y than the rest.
And, come to think of it, I picked a few because they are obviously college student-y and I happen to like that.

Stained Glass House

source:life

Last year I posted some photos of this house.
Turns out the photographer was John Dominis, a staff photographer at Life Magazine.
He took some pretty great photos during his time there, for example:

"African-American track stars Tommie Smith (C) and John Carlos (R) standing on podium after winning gold and bronze Olympic medals, respectively, raising black-gloved fists, in support of civil rights/black power, while Australian silver medalist Peter Norman stands by."

It just says "CA".

It bothers me when people have their handlebars flipped up like that.
Also on my list; bare feet.

Iran - Dmitri Kessel

source:life

More photos by Dmitri Kessel.
These are from Iran, probably 1951 because they're labeled "Iran, Shah, And Bride".
The Shah married his second wife Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiari that year.
In an earlier post I mistakenly called this woman Empress Farah Pahlavi, the Shah's third wife.
I apologize for my error.

Wilderness - Dmitri Kessel

source:life

These were mis-labeled "Wilderness - Seattle, Washington".
No date, but it looks like a trip to the coast and Olympic National Park.
There are a bunch of nice ones, I only picked the ones with weird color.
And I love the one that's upside down.

Girls Like Us

Nothing is New just mentioned Girls Like Us in a post.
It's a lesbian magazine based in Amsterdam and published by Capricious.
Check it out, because GLU is the best magazine I've seen in a while.
It's smart and funny with very few ads, and they always have great interviews with people like Susanne Oberbeck of No Bra.
There are some articles online for your perusal, and I particularly recommend the Archive section.
This collection of vintage magazine covers is from Issue #1.
